Sportsnet reporter and NHL insider Elliotte Friedman floated a theory earlier this week regarding the future of Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid that has many Oilers fans concerned.

On July 1st, the Oilers can officially sign McDavid to a contract extension and, up until recently, it was believed that the team would try to lock up the young phenom to an 8 year contract. Friedman, however, reports that McDavid may prefer a shorter term deal in the neighborhood of only 5 years.

“Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane and Steven Stamkos all took five years on their second contract before going big with the third one,” Friedman reports. “Crosby’s 12 years, you can’t do that anymore, and I wonder if the possibility is … that McDavid goes five years or so on his second deal, and then goes for another big one in his prime.”

It’s purely speculation on Friedman’s part, but given how dialled in he is behind the scenes it’s certainly an theory worthy of consideration.
