Rumor of a potential trade between the Penguins and Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings made a big move on Friday when they finally ended the Andreas Athanasiou saga by signing the restricted free-agent center to a short one-year deal, and now they may have another move in mind.

According to a report from TSN insider Bob McKenzie, the Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins were close to a trade in the off-season that would have sent Red Wings forward Riley Sheahan over to the Penguins.

While Wings general manager Ken Holland and Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford never made that deal, NHL writer Jimmy Murphy is reporting that the deal was contingent on Holland signing Athanasiou, something he has now done.

Of course since that time the Penguins have since been connected to a number of rumors around the NHL, including a potential trade with the Montreal Canadiens and that may impact the likelihood of this trade getting done. McKenzie believes that the two sides may revive the trade, although he adds that Penguins are now "exploring multiple options."

Update: Murphy has echoed McKenzie's report that nothing is imminent, however he is being told that Sheahan is now the "primary target" for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
