Rumor: Oilers reportedly targetting veteran forward.
Keystone Press

Earlier this week Edmonton Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli was a guest on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer and he shed some insight on what he's looking at heading into the regular season.

While Chiarelli didn't name any names he did admit to the fact that the organization would be looking at a number of veteran centers in the coming days and that the plan was to extend some professional tryouts to those players.

“Yeah, we’ve extended one offer and we haven’t had an answer yet and we have a couple of other guys that we may extend an offer to," said Chiarelli as per the Edmonton Journal's David Staples. "It’s not that we’re bringing in someone to just fill a spot while guys are at the World Cup. We’ve targeted a couple that have certain attributes that we feel could help us. And we would want to have a look at them on a trial basis, and there’s a legitimate chance for them to make our team and help our team.”

The Oilers GM didn't go into specifics but both Stauffer as well as Jack Michaels stated their belief that the man Chiarelli is likely to be targeting is former Stanley Cup Champion Mike Richards who has bounced around in a limited role over the past few seasons. That's not to say that if Richards were to accept a tryout he would make the team, but he did manage to find a fit as a role-player for the Capitals last season, so don't rule him out.
