Rumor: Oilers to use 1st rounder as trade chip!

The trade rumors are certainly intensifying in Edmonton, as Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli is said to be quick active on the phone and looking for a solution for his team’s two biggest needs: a defenseman and a center.

Now, another layer is being added as NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman has reportedly in his weekly 31 thoughts, that Chiarelli might choose to pull a major move before the Trade Deadline.

According to Friedman, the Oilers could use young forward Jesse Puljujarvi as a trade chip to get a huge return from a rival team. Clubs around the NHL would line up for the kid, who seems to have trouble making in work in Edmonton. If Puljujarvi is given a chance with another club, he could become more dangerous than he already appears to be.

"That’s a big, big decision and, unless the Oilers are absolutely convinced it won’t work for Puljujarvi in Edmonton, you’ve got to think the player gets another NHL shot first."

While the 19-year-old has yet to produce at the NHL level, Puljujarvi is still an intriguing talent who could come back to bite the Oilers should they decide ship him out in hopes of getting a centre or a defenseman en route to a playoff run.

However, Puljujarvi is still unable to crack the Oilers’ lineup as of now, and Chiarelli might decide to finally use him as bait and score.
