The Pittsburgh Penguins were hoping the Detroit Red Wings would close the Andreas Athanasiou's extension talks long ago, and are not looking else to bring in a third-line center.

NHL insiders had the Pens looking to land Riley Sheahan from the Wings, once they completed an agreement with Athanasiou, but enough is enough. According to Sportnet's Elliotte Friedman and his 31 thoughts, Pittsburgh went elsewhere to try to convince a player to fill the void on their third-line.

According to the insider, the Penguins inquired about Carolina Hurricanes' Jordan Staal. The former first round pick would then reunite with his fomer team, with who he won a Stanley Cup back in 2009.

GM Jim Rutherford is rumored to have asked about acquiring Staal, but the Hurricanes had no interest in parting ways with him.

In 75 games with Carolina last season, Staal recorded 16 goals and 45 points.

Wouldn't you love a reunion?
