Big player for player deal involving two veterans could be on the way.

On Thursday Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman put to bed one of the rumors he helped create, however he also spawned a new rumor when doing so.

First, Friedman reported that his previous belief that the Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings had been discussing a trade involving Senators defenseman Dion Phaneuf, and Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown was incorrect, however the Phaneuf part of that rumor appears to have been on point.

The player coming back from Los Angeles however would have been another veteran forward. From Friedman's report on Thursday(emphasis our own):

When I speculated a couple of weeks ago that a Kings-Senators deal involving Dustin Brown and Dion Phaneuf made sense because the money is almost even, I think I guessed the wrong L.A. player. More likely, they were discussing Marian Gaborik.

While Gaborik has slowed down considerably, he comes at a much cheaper cost than Phaneuf currently does against the salary cap, and the cap savings may be the big motivating factor for the Senators in this deal.

More to come as this rumor develops.
