In case you missed it yesterday, restricted free agent Colin White signed a six year contract with the Ottawa Senators worth $4.75 million per season. With White signing, there are hopes across the league that some of the big name RFAs will start to ink deals in the coming days and weeks. As it stands there are several legit young stars without contract for the upcoming season. Players like Brayden Point, Patrik Laine, Mitch Marner, Charlie McAvoy, Mikko Rantanen, Brock Boeser and Matthew Tkachuk.

Marner and his camp are reportedly seeking as much as $13 million per season on a longterm deal. Boeser and Tkachuk are believed to be negotiating deals in the $7 million per season range. Then there’s Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov who is reportedly seeking as much as $10 million on a long term deal.

Check it out:

Defensemen Zach Werenski, by comparison, is reportedly seeking $5 million per season on a three year deal.

Listen, Provorov is a very impressive young defenseman. But is he worth twice as much as Werenski? Not a chance. In fact, only two defensemen in the entire NHL earn what Provorov is seeking: Erik Karlsson and Drew Doughty. With all due respect to Provorov, he’s simply not on the same level as those two perennial Norris Trophy contenders.

The 22 year old Russian is coming off a disappointing campaign in 2018-19, scoring seven goals and 26 points in 82 games. Just a season prior however he netted 17 goals and 41 points in 82 games.
