The National Hockey League teased a lot of fans in Quebec City with the expansion process this year, eventually only awarding a franchise to the city of Las Vegas leaving Quebec City high and dry.

It appears however that Quebec City and Quebecor, the ownership group attempting to bring NHL hockey back to the city, did have an opportunity to do just that this summer, but due to a high cost declined that opportunity.

On Tuesday morning Radio X host Jeff Fillion reported that prior to the NHL announcing their expansion in Las Vegas, the Quebecor group had been approached to purchase the Arizona Coyotes for an undisclosed amount. According to Fillion Pierre Dion made the decision not to move forward with a relocation because he felt the price didn't make sense, having previously made similar comments in regards to the $500 million USD expansion fee.

Fillion is usually a reliable source, however he incorrectly predicted the return of the Nordiques earlier this summer, and one would imagine if he had heard of these talks at the time, it may have prompted the aforementioned prediction.
