Rumor: Rangers may be shopping their top defenseman!

The New York Rangers aren't the type of team that accepts mediocrity. They've been a playoff team year in and year out. They've only missed out on the playoffs once (2009-10) since the 2004-05 lockout year.

With their sluggish 3-7-2 start, there are a lot of rumblings out there implicating a big move on the horizon in New York.

That could very well be the firing of head coach Alain Vigneault, or a trade implicating one or both of Chris Kreider and Mats Zuccarello as has been speculated over the past week or so.

But another big name has been mentioned recently by New York Post's Larry Brooks - team captain Ryan McDonagh

Acquired in one of the most lopsided deals in the past decade from the Montreal Canadiens, the former first round pick has become a stable force on the New York Rangers' squad, causing Habs fans to live in total regret of the trade that saw Scott Gomez come the other way.

But now McDonagh may be used as trade bait if things don't turn around soon. Kevin Shattenkirk, the top unrestricted free agent of the summer 2017 class, was signed to a long-term deal and was expected to help improve the Rangers, but the team hasn't been able to make things work in the first 12 games of the year.

It's unlikely a deal happens anytime soon with the captain, but if things continue to head down this path for much longer, it appears no one is untouchable.

What would you offer for his services?
