Rumor: Red Wings have acquired a new goaltender.

The Detroit Red Wings have made a relatively small addition to their roster.

According to a report from TSN National Hockey League insider Frank Seravalli it now appears that the Detroit Red Wings have acquired a new goaltender to serve in the back up role behind veteran Jimmy Howard. Although the move has not yet been made official, Seravalli is reporting that it appears goaltender Calvin Pickard will be signing with the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent.

Pickard is of course a former 2nd round draft pick from the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft where he was selected at 49th overall by the Colorado Avalanche. The 27 year old netminder got off to a pretty solid start with the Avalanche but since then he has struggled badly as he has bounced from one team to another. In the last 2 seaons alone Pickard has made stops with the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Philadelphia Flyers, the Arizona Coyotes, and the American Hockey League's Tuscon Roadrunners. His inability to find a more permanent home has been a testament to his inconsistent play between the pipes, but it does not sound like the Red Wings are expecting him to be a starter.

According to Seravalli there is an expectation that Pickard and veteran back up goaltender Jonathan Bernier will compete for the back up job behind Howard, a story line that will definitely be worth keep an eye on moving forward. No word on what the financials of this deal might look like, but given Pickard's last few seasons I think it is fair to say that the Red Wings are just trying to bolster their depth at the position.
