Rumor: Serious rumblings of yet another coaching change in the NHL

While hockey fans had to endure the entire 2017-18 NHL season without a single coaching change, we’re just one month into the 2018-19 season and there have already been two high profile firings already.

Of course, the Los Angeles Kings parted way with John Stevens last, then just yesterday the Chicago Blackhawks dismissed longtime coach Joel Quenneville. In Stevens’ place is Willie Desjardins, who coached the Vancouver Canucks from 2014 until 2017. In Quenneville’s place is the 33 year old Jeremy Colliton, the organization’s former AHL head coach.

With both the Kings and the Blackhawks turning the page this week, there are a few NHL coaches around the league who HAVE to be feeling the heat. Edmonton Oilers head coach Todd McLellan and Minnesota Wild head coach Bruce Boudreau were two coaches identified as being under the most pressure before this season began, both their teams have performed reasonably well to start the campaign. Unless something goes terribly wrong for the Oilers or the Wild, it would seem that their jobs are safe.

You can’t say so much for St. Louis Blues head coach Mike Yeo, however. The Blues have gotten off to a DREADFUL start and there are real rumblings out there that Yeo could be on the outs with Quenneville potentially taking over. Well, today’s report from Blues insider Lou Korac of NHL.com only helped to fuel the flames of the hottest rumor in the NHL.

Check it out:

The St. Louis blues have canceled practice, so there's your on ice news for today.

That’s… fishy. Real fishy. No official word yet on why the team cancelled practice, but speculation is that Yeo could be on the outs even sooner than expected. The Blues don’t play until Friday night when the host the San Jose Sharks in St. Louis, so GM Doug Armstrong has some time to make his decision, but don’t be surprised if Yeo is given his walking papers between now and Friday morning.

Quenneville, of course, coached the Blues from 1996 until 2004 and led the team deep into the playoffs almost every season he was behind the bench in St. Louis. Could the Blues go “Back to the Future” and hire Coach Q?
