Rumor: Shattenkirk may be only be interested in signing a long-term deal with two NHL teams.

The Kevin Shattenkirk saga has been one of the more fascinating stories over the past two seasons and it got even better last week when reports broke that Shattenkirk had blocked a big trade by rejecting a $42 million dollar extension. The Tampa Bay Lightning were heavily rumored to be the team that made that offer although that remains unconfirmed.

On Monday insider Pierre LeBrun was a guest on TSN's 1040 in Vancouver and when asked why he felt Shattenkirk had turned down the offer, LeBrun responded by indicating he felt it could be a matter of location for Shattenkirk.

"We know where he's from, maybe he thinks there's a good chance between the Rangers and the Devils that he gets a good offer," said Lebrun.

"I think New Jersey would make him a big offer this summer, they got tons of cap space, they want to upgrade. Maybe deep down he's thinking let's play this out and maybe land somewhere close to home."

LeBrun believes that short of a ridiculous contract offer, or perhaps an offer from either the Rangers or Devils, Shattenkirk will be dealt as a rental player prior to the deadline. The biggest losers in all of this may end up being the Blues who will get far less value for him as a rental than they would have in a sign and trade.
