Rumor: Stamkos reportedly had insane demands for the Leafs.

There were a lot of disappointed people in the city of Toronto when it was announced that Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos had made the decision to re-sign with the team that drafted him, but those fans may reconsider their position when they hear how much the move would have cost the Leafs.

While we don't officially know the number, and likely never will, Jeff Marek revealed during his show with Yahoo's Greg Wyshynski this week that he had heard Stamkos was asking for a ridiculous number.

“I think the thought is if it’s 8 1/2 in Tampa, it’s 14 in Toronto when you factor in the tax. You can either hit it or not,” Marek said as per SB Nation. To which Greg Wyshynski said, “It’s ‘give me all the monies and make it work.’

Stamkos is a great hockey player, but committing $14 million to any player seems absurd to say the least, especially when you consider that the organizations total cap space for this upcoming season is $73 million, it would be a contract that represents 19% of the Leafs total salary cap.

Needless to say if there's any truth to this number, there are a great many Leaf fans who will be very happy their organization did not pull the trigger on this deal.
