Bad news for starting goaltender.

If this most recent trade deadline proved anything it's that the market for veteran goaltenders right now is about as cool as it's ever been in the National Hockey League.

As a result one writer believes that the future of Philadelphia Flyers' starting goaltender Steve Mason could very well be in jeopardy, not just as a member of the Flyers' organization either but potentially even as a NHLer.

From Erik Wollschlager of FanRag Sports:

The issue isn’t Mason’s age. At 28, many goaltenders are in the middle of their peak. It seems that Mason peaked too early, and his best years are behind him. With the Flyers committing to Neuvirth for two more seasons, Mason will be searching for a team on July 1, and his marketability has fallen drastically after his poor season...

The future is certainly uncertain for Mason. With AHL standout Anthony Stolarz waiting in the wings, there is no reason for the Flyers to retain Mason beyond this season. There are a lot of options on the market right now, so even as other teams begin to fill holes in their roster, Mason may not have a spot on another team, either.

Wollschlager is spot in in his assessment of the goalie market, and both veterans Jaroslav Halak and Marc-Andre Fleury are arguably better players that their respective organizations failed to move at the deadline. With a number of veteran options believed to be available on the market, a struggling Steve Mason may not be enough to entice any team to take a gamble.
