Rumor: Taylor Hall trade is in the works.

For those of us on the outside looking in the reality of New Jersey Devils' star forward Taylor Hall being traded this season appeared to be nothing more than a forgone conclusion. Hall has made it clear that he desperately wants the chance to play for a winning team for once in his career and given those feelings it seemed all but impossible that the New Jersey Devils and Devils general manager Ray Shero would find a way to convince the former Hart Memorial Trophy winner to sign a new contract extension prior to the end of the season.

The Devils have been nothing short of terrible this season in spite of the addition of some significant talent during the offseason and they now sit dead last in the National Hockey League's Metropolitan Division with just 9 total wins this season so far. That lack of success has doomed their chances to retain Hall in the eyes of many, but now it sounds like the New Jersey Devils themselves have finally accepted the reality that Hall will not remain a Devil beyond this season and have started to seriously work on a trade involving the veteran star forward.

According to a breaking news report from TSN NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, sources have informed him that the Devils have started to listen to trade offers from rival organizations looking to acquire Hall. LeBrun did add the caveat that the Devils could choose not to trade Hall at all, however that notions seems almost laughable at this point barring a drastic turn around from the Devils in the 2019 - 2020 NHL regular season.

From LeBrun:

Hearing that the Devils have started to listen from teams on Taylor Hall. Doesn't mean they will for sure trade him but given their place in the standings and the magnitude of a potential deal, GM Ray Shero is now in listening mode.

If and when he's dealt, I would expect the deal to have a conditional nature to it so that if he re-signs with his new club there will be additional asset(s)... Either way, this isn't necessarily a deal, if it happens, that must wait until the Feb. 24 deadline....

TSN insider Darren Dreger has also chimed in, adding that Shero is now trying to gauge the market to see what kind of return he can expect for his star player in a trade deal.

Not what you want to hear if you're a Devils fan and unfortunately the news comes just hours after it was announced that Devils' first overall pick Jack Hughes has been sidelined for the first time in his career.
