This .500 team can certainly use the help.

It’s no secret that the Detroit Red Wings could certainly use a little help on their blue line. They’ve struggled mightily thus far into the 2016-2017 regular season schedule as their 8-8-1 record demonstrates, and have often left their goaltenders out to dry through most of their losses.

While neither Petr Mrazek nor Jimmy Howard are solely to blame, it comes as no surprise then that general manager Ken Holland is actively shopping for defensive help. Reportedly, he has unsuccessfully done so for a few years now, and most recently missed the boat on Jacob Trouba (who re-signed with the Winnipeg Jets) as well as Cam Fowler, who continues to be with the Anaheim Ducks.

Elliott Friedman of Sportsnet.ca is reporting that there’s a new name that could be of interest to the Red Wings: Dougie Hamilton. He currently plays for the Calgary Flames and could make for a much-needed steady presence on the back end. At the age of 23, the 6’ 6” hulking defenseman could provide stability while occasionally chipping in offensively.

He has two goals and six points through 17 games played so far, and has been held pointless in his last eight games.
