Rumor: Veteran defenseman blocked a big trade tor Vancouver.
Keystone Press

We had a big rumor earlier this summer regarding veteran defenseman Jason Demers and a trade that would have sent him to the Vancouver Canucks.

The rumor came from TSN hockey insider Pierre LeBrun who reported that Demers had used his eight team no-trade clause to block a trade that would have made him the newest member of the Canucks.

Now, roughly two months after that report, Demers has finally commented on the rumor after he was asked a direct question about that very rumor following offseason training session.

“I can’t really comment on that. It is what it is, and Pierre’s got his sources. He’s going to tweet his stuff. That’s between my agent and me and Dale, but I’m going to camp right now a Panther,” Demers said as per Luke Fox of Sportsnet.

“I’m going in ready for the season. I’m going to be a part of them for four more years. I have to make sure I have a way better year than last year, as a team and personally.”

Needless to say this news likely won't be well received by the Vancouver Canucks fan base, however to be fair to Demers his eight team no-trade is a part of his contract that he negotiated, and was well within his rights to use.

One has to wonder what could have been however had Demers opted to allow that trade to go through.
