With the Buffalo Sabres mired at the bottom of the NHL’s standings for a sixth consecutive season, all eyes are on forward Evander Kane and his future with the club. The pending unrestricted free-agent is likely to be the biggest trade target on the market during the February 26 NHL Trade Deadline, and NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has an inkling of where he may end up.

On a recent appearance with Sportsnet 650 radio in Vancouver, Friedman offered up a destination for Kane that may surprise some hockey fans: the St Louis Blues.

“I think this: I think Buffalo is going to reach a point where they’re going to listen, and I think there’s going to be a lot of offers. Now you’re looking at the trade chips – Duchene is gone, Turris is gone. We’re looking at a situation where now everybody is going to call around and say, ‘Who’s left.’ I think Kane is going to be very high on that list. I don’t know if it means an extension, but I do think it means that especially teams that are going to all-in for this season. I’m wondering about a team like St. Louis, do they feel they have to answer. Nashville gets Turris. Does St. Louis feel now that they have to add something. He might be a really good fit for them.”

If the Blues could roll out a top six with Vladimir Tarasenko, Jaden Schwartz, Paul Stastny, Alex Steen, Brayden Schenn AND Evander Kane… you’d have to like their chances in the playoffs. The real question is, who would the Blues offer up in exchange for Kane? Certainly picks could be an option, but might they part with 2017  1st round pick Klim Kostin? The big Russian winger has torn up the AHL as an 18-year-old so far and could fit right into the Sabres’ roster. Maybe there’s a match ? Stay tuned.
