Rumor: Wings set to blow up young core?

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for the Detroit Red Wings… they drop an embarrassing 10-1 decision to the Montreal Canadiens. The woeful Wings have lost seven in a row now and sit well out of the wildcard race in the NHL’s Eastern Conference

Even worse? The team, as currently constructed by GM Ken Holland, is right up against the salary cap and has very few trade chips to play. With unpalatable contracts for veteran players like Justin Abelkader, Darren Helm, Jonathan Ericsson and Niklas Kronwall, Mlive.com’s Ansar Khan reports that Holland may have no choice but to trade the team’s future for help now. That means players like Anthony Mantha, Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou.

According to Khan:

“Their tradable commodities are talented young forwards Anthony Mantha, Dylan Larkin, Andreas Athanasiou and their first-round pick. But it makes no sense for a team that has no realistic chance of competing for the Stanley Cup to sacrifice part of its future.”

Wow… could you imagine Holland trading any of those future assets? The Red Wings faithful would cause a riot! They’d certainly be calling for the head of Holland on a platter. Hopefully the team can right the ship before such a drastic move goes down, but with Holland… you never know.
