A lot of teams have been paying attention to the huge contracts the Edmonton Oilers handed out to their young stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl this summer, and that may change how they approach new deals with their own players.

Now according to Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander, the Toronto Maple Leafs and his representatives have already begun negotiating his next deal, presumably in the hopes that getting the extension done early could save the Leafs money down the line.

“They’ve talked a little bit, but we’ll see what happens,” said Nylander as per Maple Leafs Hot Stove.

TSN insider Darren Dreger also commented on the situation, and it seems that he believes there's a real possibility the Leafs will look to get this done as quickly as they can.

"I think that wise hockey executives do pay attention to what happens around them. If Pete Chiarelli could hit the rewind button and go back to last summer with Leon Draisaitl, of course he would do that. Toronto has to be looking at that situation and going, 'Okay, so how much do we believe in these young guys' at this point. If they believe in them, it’s probably wise spending to get it done as soon as possible."

It may not be long before William Nylander hits a monster payday with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
