The Pittsburgh Penguins could be entering a battle with the Boston Bruins to land Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Duchene, but the defending champions may be another plan in mind to put into action if this one falls through.
According to Jimmy Murphy, the Pens will go after Detroit Red Wings' Riley Sheahan if they come up short of the Duchene trade. The Wings are looking to free up some cap space and are still waiting to see if they can come up to an agreement with free agent Andreas Athanasiou.
They might want to ship Sheahan out and the Penguins could make a pitch for the centerman. Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford was clear about looking to add a centerman to his team since the start of training camp.
The trade between the Pens and the Wings could come to fruition sooner than later...
