Rumour: Leafs to move Rielly to make room for Pietrangelo!
Twitter

Ever since veteran defenseman Alex Pietrangelo’s contract talks have broken with the St. Louis Blues last week, fans have been trying to see how he could fit into the Toronto Maple Leafs’ wallet - and we bet general manager Kyle Dubas has been doing the same!

Pietrangelo is reportedly seeking an $8 or $9 million annual salary and it would take a trade for the Maple Leafs to make room for it on their cap space.

Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star writes that some fans have suggested trading defenceman Morgan Rielly to open the roughly $9 million needed to land Pietrangelo.

Now we can understand how this mathematically makes sense for the Maple Leafs, however McGran fears that this would only upgrade the team’s defence slightly. After all, Rielly is four years younger than Pietrangelo.

This could backfire for Dubas.

McGran goes on to say that he doesn’t see the Leafs parting with a core forward this offseason. He believes they will pursue depth pieces to upgrade their defense in free agency and suggests that Dubas goes after
Zach Bogosian, Luke Schenn, Michael Stone, Dylan DeMelo and Cody Goloubef to solidify the back end.

According to Cap Friendly, the Maple Leafs currently have $6.1 million in projected cap space after making room by trading winger Kasperi Kapanen to the Pittsburgh Penguins last month.
