It’s probably safe to say that things haven’t exactly gone according to plan for Ryan Donato and the Minnesota Wild so far this season. Then again… the same could probably be said for much of the Wild’s roster so far this season.

In any case, the talented 23 year old forward has just one goal and three points in 16 games this season. Last season, after coming over from the Boston Bruins in a trade for Charlie Coyle, Donato had an impressive four goals and 16 points in 22 games. Wild fans and indeed the Wild’s coaching and management group felt that they had a real offensive gem in Donato. But now it appears as if Donato may have worn out his welcome in Minny.

According to a report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Donato’s name is out there in trade talks and general managers around the league are hoping to poach him.

Check it out:

A couple of sources said they heard Ryan Donato’s name out there, but I think Minnesota’s plans are to be patient with him. This could be a case where teams are trying to see if a talented young player can be poached because he was acquired by the previous regime.

Interesting take, especially with new management running the show in Minny. Still, the Wild are lacking in players with high-end offensive instincts. They’d be wise to pass on offers for Donato for the time being.
