The Ottawa Senators are finally talking about just how bad the injuries to gritty forward Scott Sabourin are and, although you never want to see a player injured, I must admit that the news from the Senators today is pretty darn fantastic.

Sabourin of course suffered some rather nasty looking injuries on Saturday night when his Ottawa Senators took on the Boston Bruins, injuries that stemmed from a body check on Bruins veteran forward David Backes. It was Sabourin who initiated the contact with Backes and although the hit was a clean one it resulted in a horrifying scene on the ice. Both Backes and Sabourin went shoulder to shoulder on the hit but the whiplash effect of that contact caused their two heads to collide, knocking Sabourin out cold in the process. The defenseless Senators forward then fell face first onto the ice and due to the fact that he was completely out of it he made no effort to protect his face from the impact against the ice hard playing surface.

According to reports from the arena on Saturday there was a substantial amount of blood on Sabourin's face after the impact with the ice. Sabourin's nose and mouth were reportedly both damaged as a result of his face plant and unsurprisingly we learned today that his nose may have taken the worst part of that impact.

Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion met with members of the media on Sunday and was able to provide some official details regarding the status of his injured player. According to Doruon Sabourin has suffered a fractured nose and currently remains in hospital as a result of his injuries, however the expectation is that he will be released from the hospital at some point during the day today. That is obviously very good news and once again I sincerely hope that this is a sign that Sabourin avoided the worst case scenario. Obviously having a fractured nose is very far from being ideal but given just how bad this appeared to be as he was carried out on a stretcher last night, I can't help but think that Sabourin got very lucky to not be more seriously injured.
