Senators sign young defenseman to new deal on Monday.

The Ottawa Senators have made an interesting signing.

A report from Senators insider Bruce Garrioch has revealed that the Senators have extended defenseman Fredrik Claesson for one more year, signing him to a $650,000 one-way deal on Monday.

The 24-year-old former fifth round draft pick in 2013 has appeared in only 19 games for the Senators this season and a total of just 35 games over his NHL career, but by extending him the Senators may also be eyeing the upcoming expansion draft.

There may be more than meets the eye to the move from general manager Pierre Dorion, but then again he may merely like what he sees from Claesson this season.
