The summer keeps going and yet the San Jose Sharks are still waiting to hear from veteran unrestricted free agent forward Joe Thornton, on whether or not he will return next season.

In the meantime, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson is keeping busy. On Tuesday, he announced that his team had traded defenseman Kyle Wood in exchange for defenseman Trevor Carrick of the Carolina Hurricanes.

”Kyle is a big, puck-moving defenseman,”said Canes GM Don Waddell. ”He’s a couple years younger than Trevor, and will have time to continue to develop on Charlotte’s blueline. We thank Trevor for his contributions to our organization and wish him the best in San Jose.”

The 23-year-old did spend the year with the San Jose Barracudas of the American Hockey League (AHL), ranking second among team defensemen in assists (29) and points (35) while serving as the team’s alternate captain.

The Sharks are getting 25-year-old Carrick who also spent most of the year in the AHL.

“Trevor is a hardworking competitor and we believe he can help our team create offense from the back-end,” said Sharks Assistant General Manager and San Jose Barracuda General Manager Joe Will. “He was a key piece of Charlotte’s Calder Cup-winning team last season and will be an excellent addition to our already deep blueline in San Jose. We also want to thank Kyle Wood for his contributions on and off the ice with the Barracuda.”

Carrick took part in 71 games and recording 47 points (nine goals, 38 assists). He finished fourth among AHL blueliners in assists and tied for fifth in points, fourth on Charlotte in points and led Checkers defensemen in assists and points.

While this is a minor league trade, it sure sounds like both teams are acquiring promising prospects.
