When Joe Pavekski signed a three-year deal with the Dallas Stars as an unrestricted free agent on Monday, a new captain was needed in San Jose.

When asked about the possibility of getting the C on his sweater following the departure of Pavelski, defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic made it clear to TVA Sports that he isn’t interested in becoming the Sharks’ captain.

“If I have a letter or not, it does not bother me. It’s just a letter on a sweater,” he explained in French during the interview.

He also added that he doesn’t believe the Sharks have gotten weaker even they lost Pavelski, Joonas Donskoi and Gustav Nyquist in free agency. He thinks the Sharks remain a strong contender despite having lost players and seeing that the teams need to deal with the cap space.

“None of these departures have surprised me,” he added. “Contracts are so individual. Every player has a specific idea on what they want to get and if the Sharks aren’t ready to offer as much they will go get it somewhere else.”

While Vlasic might not be ready to take on the role of captain, the Sharks might ask veteran and beloved player Joe Thornton. He, who turned 40 on Tuesday, has yet to sign an extension with the Sharks but did reveal he was set on playing on and wanting to stay in San Jose.

We might end up with Thornton as a captain, who knows?
