Shawn Horcoff has released a statement following his suspension for PED use.

It has not been a good day for Anaheim Ducks forward Shawn Horcoff.

Today will go down as the day he has irreparably damaged his reputation in the National Hockey League, and although absolutely no one is naive enough to believe he is the only player who has used performance enhancing drugs, he unfortunately got caught.

I suppose somewhat to his credit Horcoff has immediately come forward and addressed the suspension, and has admitted his guilt and takes full responsibility for his actions, although how much weight that will carry with fans remains to be seen. Admitting to something after you've been caught red-handed is pretty easy after all.

“While recovering from an injury I suffered this past fall, I tried a treatment that I believed would help speed up the healing process,” said Horcoff.

“Although I was unaware that this treatment was not permitted under NHL rules, that is no excuse whatsoever. I should have done my research and I should have checked with the NHL/NHLPA performance enhancing substances program’s doctors. I accept full responsibility for my actions, and I am sorry.”

While I would love to believe Horcoff, after all the guy has been in the league for 15 years and never got caught before, this has become the go to excuse for athletes who get busted using performance enhancers. While it's totally unfair to judge Horcoff based on the mistakes others have made in the past, this is the reality of modern day pro sports.
