Sheldon Souray calls out Oilers owner after public announcement of his life-threatening illness

In case you missed it, NHL insider John Shannon of Sportsnet broke the news yesterday that Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz is suffering through a potentially life-threatening sinus illness. The news came to light following hockey fans openly mocking Katz for his disheveled appearance during yesterday’s press conference in which Katz introduced Ken Holland as the Oilers’ next GM.

Again, it was Shannon who broke the news of Katz’s illness, a report that was confirmed by the Oilers organization.

After Shannon’s tweet was sent out into the Twittersphere, former Oilers defenseman Sheldon Souray weighed in on the matter with his own personal tale about battling a similar condition and… well let’s just say he took the high road when it’s clear he could take personal issue with Katz.

Sometime during the Olympic Break, my hand became infected and I got very sick. I flew back to EDM from LA and went to the hospital that night. I had a bad blood and bone infection (MRSA). After spending a few days in ICU and a couple more surgeries later 2/4

I was close to having my hand amputated. I spent about 12 weeks on the IV bag with a PIC line on my heart to keep the infection from killing me. During the 10 days in the hospital, I was told that Oilers management(Katz,Kevin, Tambellini) thought I was “milking” the injury 3/4

When I spoke to the press in April 2010, I still hadn’t talked to management. I wasn’t mad they “didn’t check on me”. I was floored they thought I was using this injury not to play again that season. Obviously the rest is history. These infections are real and serious. 4/4
