Should the Flames sign Iginla?

In his latest article for Calgary Flames blog Matchsticks and Gasoline, blogger Mark Parkinson takes a look at unrestricted free-agent Jarome Iginla and attempts to find a fit for the former Flames superstar on the team’s current roster.

So, should the Flames sign Iginla? Parkinson’s conclusion: no way. Among Parksinson’s arguments against bringing back the former Flames captain is the fact that Iginla simply can’t keep up with the pace of today’s NHL. The 40-year-old winger looks every day his age and his body is breaking down after 20 years of playing his rough and tumble style. Parkinson also points to Iginla declining production, as he managed just 27 points in 80 games last season split between the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings.

Still, we’re of the opinion that Iginla still has some gas in the tank. If he can be a relatively productive goal scorer on the Flames’ power play and provide them with some veteran leadership on the ice and in the locker room, we say he’s a solid addition.

What do you think? Wouldn’t you love to see Iggy back in a Flames uniform? You have to admit, a Stanley Cup championship in Calgary would be the storybook ending for a legendary, Hall of Fame career.
