Smith suffers “serious” injury after taking a skate to the face.

You never want to see this happen to any player, regardless of how you feel about that player or the National Hockey League franchise that he represents.

On Friday night the Ottawa Senators were facing off against the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado and unfortunately for the Senators it turned out to be a very rough night. For Senators forward Matt Duchene it was a return to the former team that he had called home for so long, and although he managed to find the back of the net on two different occasions his team was unable to convert that into a victory eventually falling by a margin of 6 - 3.

As bad as the night was for the Senators on the scoreboard however the real story coming out of the game was the very scary looking injury that was suffered by veteran Senators forward Zack Smith. Although I did not see the incident happen in real time, reports coming out of the game indicate that Smith was struck by a skate to the face during the second period of the Friday night match up, and you don't need any further details to realize how scary that must have been for him. Not only are hockey blades ultra sharp but to have one hit you in the face during a game played at as high as speed as hockey in the NHL tends to be must have been truly horrifying. 

Unsurprisingly Smith was injured on the play although now it sounds like the injury is going to be rather serious in nature. A report from Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen has revealed that Smith suffered a broken bone in his face as a result of being struck by the skate and the update from Ottawa Senators head coach Guy Boucher was not a promising one. According to Boucher the injury is "serious" in nature and as a result Smith is now on his way back to Ottawa. The expectation is that he will be out for some time but we won't know for certain until the Senators get a chance to evaluate him further and make it official.
