The NHL community was in shock earlier this week when former NHLer and current NBC analyst Eddie Olczyk announced that he’d been diagnosed with colon cancer. The former 3rd overall pick of the Chicago Blackhawks had a lengthy 16 year NHL career that saw him suit up for the Hawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, with whom he won a Stanley Cup in 1994, Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins.

The veteran of over 350 fights in his NHL career is in for the fight of his life as he takes on cancer, but his son Eddie Olczyk Jr. feels his father is up to the task. The younger Olcyzk took to social media this morning to thank fans and fill us all in on how the family is handling the news.

We’re with you Olczyk family! You have the support of the entire hockey community behind you and we know that no matter what happens, Eddie will face this terrible disease head on like the warrior he is. All the best, Eddie!
