This should probably serve as a warning to all the National Hockey League general managers looking to make a big trade at the deadline today, especially those looking to make a big trade for a rental player.

Just one day ago the Dallas Stars made a big trade when they acquired talented veteran forward Mats Zuccarello from the New York Rangers in a trade that cost them big time. Yes, it's true that the Dallas Stars and general manager Jim Nill only gave up a second round pick at the 2019 National Hockey League Entry Draft and a third round pick at the 2020 National Hockey League Entry Draft but both those picks came with some serious conditions attached to them. Based on both the Stars performance in the playoffs and Zuccarello's performance in those games both of those picks have the possibility of transforming into a 1st round pick for the New York Rangers.

That being said the move appeared to be paying off in Zuccarello's very first game as a member of the Dallas Stars with the veteran forward putting on an electric performance with his new team right out of the gate. In his very first game as a Star Zuccarello contributed to two goals, assisting on one and scoring off of a one timer to add one of his own. Those goals would prove to be the tying goal and the eventual game winner in a 4 - 3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, one of the teams chasing them in the standings for a 2019 Stanley Cup playoff berth.

It seemed like a perfect match for the Stars and Zuccarello and looked like a perfect move from general manager Jim Nill until it all turned into a major disaster. As I stated earlier Zuccarello was putting on an electric performance and was doing so on both ends of the ice, including blocking shots for his new team in spite of having never played for them before.

It was one of those blocked shots that would knock Zuccarello out of the game with an injury, and now according to Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider John Shannon we know just how serious that injury is. Shannon is now reporting that Zuccarello has suffered a broken arm, and although the initial diagnosis was a minimum of a 4 week absence for Zuccarello, you have to wonder if this might not keep him out much longer.
