It is no secret: the Toronto Maple Leafs will have to move pieces around to make room on the cap space for forward Zach Hyman who is set to return from injury.

This prompted TSN’s Shawn Simpson to wonder if the Leafs will decide place veteran forward Jason Spezza on waivers. He goes further by saying that this could be the perfect opportunity for the Ottawa Senators to claim him and have him return as a leader for the young crew in the nation’s capital.

“Sounds like Spezza will be waived when Hyman returns.

He’s not a great fit as a 4th line center. But gotta say if I’m looking for a mentor for L. Brown, White, or Norris. I’m bringing him back to Ottawa a 700k, and playing him ahead of Anisimov, Ryan, Boedker, or Beaudin.”

Spezza has been a healthy scratch on several occasions for the Maple Leafs this season. The Senators are reportedly seeking another experienced forward to boost their roster and could consider a reunion with Spezza.

His contract of one-year, with a value of $700k, is affordable for the budget-conscious Senators and this could be the way to get fans back in the seats in Ottawa.
