Details inside.
According to Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette, Steven Stamkos could end up in Montreal.
The prolific player could play in Montreal, but only as a rental player. Stamos would have to approve the trade and will only do so if he thinks the Canadiens have a chance to win the Stanley Cup.
Steven Stamkos and the Tampa Bay Lightning are currently far apart on their contract extension talks, according to many sources.
Hickey believes that Stamkos could be a short-term solution for general manager Marc Bergevin, but it is definitely not at the top of his list. Even if Montreal is in dying need of right wingers, Stamkos has been very vocal the past couple of years about his desire to play at the center position.
Stamos would be a great fit in Montreal and could be the missing piece for the franchise's 25th Stanley cup.
Unfortunately for the Canadiens' fans, the price to pay, even as a rental, to get Stamkos would be pretty steep. Tampa Bay would be a bit foolish to trade him in the same division, even in the same conference would be a head scratching move, if Steve Yzerman decides to move the star forward.
Steven Stamkos has been a part of rumours for a couple of weeks now, since he is playing his last year on his contract and hasn't been extended yet. Stamkos also inadvertently favourite a Tweet suggesting that he could play for the Toronto Maple Leafs next season, sparking all kind of speculations.
