The St. Louis Blues still have a lot of business to take care of this offseason and there are still a lot of question about just how many players from their Stanley Cup Championship roster that they will be able to retain.

On Sunday general manager Doug Armstrong secured one of those key pieces on his team by signing Stanley Cup Champion center Oskar Sundqvist to a brand new contract extension. According to a breaking news report from St. Louis Blues reporter Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Blues and Sundqvist have come to terms on a 4 year deal that will see him earn $11 million over the full term of that contract. That works out to an average annual value of $2.75 million per season, a very reasonable price tag for a player that was a big contributor during the Blues run to the Stanley Cup.

Sundqvist is coming off of what was unquestionably the best season of his career thus far in the National Hockey League. The former Pittsburgh Penguins 3rd round draft pick (81st overall) at the 2012 NHL Entry draft appeared in 74 games for the Blues last season, 32 more games than he had previously played inside a single season. In fact his 74 games represent more than half of his career experience in the NHL thus far. Through that stretch of play Sundqvist would go on to record 14 goals and 17 assists for a total of 31 points and finished the season with a plus minus rating of -1.

No doubt the Blues and their fans are quite happy with this deal, and it seems fair to suggest that Sundqvist will be very happy with 4 years of guaranteed security under his belt after just 1 full season in the National Hockey League.
