Stanley Cup Champion Patrick Maroon signs with a rival team!

Stanley Cup Champion Patrick Maroon has seemingly grown tired of waiting for a commitment from his hometown team.

According to a breaking news report from St. Louis Blues rinkside reporter Andy Strickland, the veteran unrestricted free agent has finally agreed to sign a new deal, but it will not be as a member of the Blues. Instead Strickland is reporting that Maroon has signed a new one year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and it sounds like the Lightning are getting one hell of a deal here.

Strickland is reporting that Maroon has signed for a mere $900,000 with the Lightning, a very small price tag for a power forward who's physical presence on the ice just helped the Blues capture their first ever Stanley Cup Championship. Over the 26 games that Maroon played during the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs  he recorded 3 goals and 4 assists for a total of 7 points, but it was his dominant physical play that truly made him a factor, especially as the Blues got deeper in the tournament.

Maroon is also coming off a fairly solid regular season, especially when you consider how bad the Blues were to start the year, with 74 games played. Over that stretch he would collect 10 goals and 18 assists for a total of 28 points on the season, adding 64 penalty minutes and finishing with a plus minus rating of -3 over the entire season.

This is obviously a huge get for the Tampa Bay Lightning, and an equally costly loss for the St. Louis Blues. It is hard to imagine that Maroon at $900,000 was truly that impossible a situation for the Blues to navigate and given Maroon's popularity in that market I imagine this decision will be poorly received.
