Stars executive admits the team should have traded captain Jamie Benn

The beef between Stars management and their star captain continues…

It’s been over two weeks since Dallas Stars CEO Jim Lites ripped superstars Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn calling them “fucking horse shit.”

Stars insider Sean Shapiro of The Athletic broke the story in which Lites threw his team’s two best players completely under the bus and Shapiro made waves again today when he revealed that a team source admitted to him that they should have traded Benn following his 2014-15 Art Ross Trophy winning season.

Say what!? They should have traded their captain and the league’s top scorer? For what? Spare parts?

Check out this quote from Shapiro’s article:

Last month a team source told me that in hindsight, Benn winning the Art Ross could have been the worst thing to ever happen to this franchise. It was an award that helped Benn demand his massive contract and set unfair expectations for a player about to exit his prime. In hindsight, that was the moment this source said the Stars should have traded Benn for the king’s ransom that he would have been worth at the time.

That’s… that’s certainly one way to run your organization. Another way would maybe be to get some secondary scoring help for the league’s top scorer… and maybe a goalie who is actually capable of playing at the NHL level. But you know… Jamie Benn and his 87 points in 82 games are the problem…

One thing’s for sure, if things don’t improve on the ice for the Stars over the second half of the season there will be some SERIOUS discussion about whether or not Benn should be traded. If that’s the case, expect almost every team in the NHL to line up offers for the superstar winger. The power forward has 272 goals and 629 points in 712 games all with the Stars. This season he has 18 goals and 33 points in 45 games.
