Two of the National Hockey League's biggest names have come under fire in a way that they have likely never faced before.

A stunning report from Dallas Stars insider Sean Shapiro has given us a rather damning look at the inner workings of the Stars' organization, and at the very top levels of that organization no less, and things look extremely ugly to put it mildly. Shapiro's report has revealed comments made by Dallas Stars CEO Jim Lites and the feelings of team owner Tom Gaglardi as well and in both cases the criticism levied at Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin are some of the most damning comments I have heard from high ranking NHL executives in a very long time.

“They are fucking horse-shit, I don’t know how else to put it,” Lites said when describing Benn and Seguin as per The Athletic. “The team was ok. But (Tyler) Seguin and (Jamie) Benn were terrible.”

“We are a stars-driven league, and our stars aren’t getting it done,” Lites said. “It’s embarrassing, and no one writes it. Write it!

As I stated earlier it's not just the CEO saying these things, but the guy writing all the checks at the very top of the organization is also extremely frustrated. Although Gaglardi did not make any official statements himself, Lites did speak on his behalf and this is a clear indication that his comments were supported by ownership.

“These guys are not good enough. They’re not good enough for me, they’re not good enough for the owner, and they’re certainly not good enough for the general manager, who I can’t speak for, but it’s not good enough for the job he’s done,” Lites added. “But we’ve had meeting after meeting after meeting. The accountability on the ice is not there. These guys were signed to big contracts because they were the third- and sixth-leading scorers in the National Hockey League over the past five years. They get their money, we expect them to not be outplayed every game we play in. And if they were as good as they’ve been in the past we wouldn’t be having this conversation.”

“He’s pissed,” Lites said of the owner's mood. “And you know what it’s about.”

Seguin and Benn are both currently earning big money as members of the Stars and you have to wonder how much more patience ownership will have when it comes to paying them those big bucks when they feel as strongly as they do already.
