Steve Yzerman announces his second signing of the day.

Saturday has proven to be a relatively eventful day for general manager Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings after his team announced a pair of what are admittedly minor signings on the day.

The latest once again comes directly from the Red Wings organization with the announcement that 28 year old Turner Elson has agreed to a new 1 year deal. Elson will not be a familiar name for most fans of the National Hockey League given that he has spent nearly his entire career playing for various teams in the American Hockey League. As a result it should come as no surprise that this will be a two way deal for Elson and that it will pay him the league minimum at the NHL level.

The centerman has only appeared in 1 single game during his NHL career and that was all the way back during the 2015 - 2016 NHL season when he was a member of the Calgary Flames organization, and to his credit he actually picked up an assist in that game. I strongly suspect that the majority, if not all, of the next season will be spent in the American Hockey League, presumably as a member of the Grand Rapids Griffins, and according to Cap Friendly his salary in the minors will see him earning $115,000. Elson has spent the last 3 full seasons with the Griffins, including 61 games in this last shortened season which saw him record 9 goals and 13 assists for a combined 22 points.

As I mentioned this is the second relatively minor signing of the day from the Red Wings with the first being announced earlier today. That first contract signing was again a one year deal, this one worth $850,000, and this time it was former Edmonton Oilers first round pick Sam Gagner that signed on the dotted line with the Red Wings. Neither of these signings are going to prove to be game changers for the Red Wings, but they are important moves in the sense that it will give Yzerman a better idea of his cap situation moving forward, a cap situation that many expect the Red Wings to exploit to their benefit during the upcoming offseason.
