New contracts can't be officially announced until the 1st of July, but make no mistake National Hockey League general managers are working hard to lure free agents to their team.

National Hockey League legend turned Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman has seemingly been no exception, and is now being connected to two of the biggest free agents on the trade market.

First, Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times is reporting that the Lightning have had talks with arguably the biggest free agent on the market, defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk. Yzerman used the free agent negotiating window to reach out to Shattenkirk although how that meeting went is anyone's guess at this time.

Also interesting is the fact that Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the Lightning have also expressed interest in veteran defenseman Dan Girardi. Girardi was recently bought out of his contract by the Rangers, and it sounds like he has been getting a fair bit of interest from NHL teams.
