Very bad signs for the Islanders.

If you're a fan of the New York Islanders you should probably start getting worried, and if you're a fan of captain John Tavares you should be even more concerned.

Tavares could have signed a new deal with the Islanders days ago but he hasn't, and while players like Carey Price and Connor McDavid have collected huge paydays to remain with the Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers, Tavares has not followed suit.

There has long been speculation that Tavares could leave the team as a free agent at the end of the 2017-2018 season, and now Islanders insider Arthur Staple is reporting that Tavares doesn't even appear to be close to signing.

From Staple:

But, while there hardly is any animosity on either side — general manager Garth Snow and coach Doug Weight are in regular contact with their star and captain, who still has a year to go on his current deal — there have been no announcements and no indications Tavares is ready to sign on.

Staple believes both concerns about the the Islanders current arena situation as well as concerns with the Islanders front office are big factors currently at play, and with no definitive arena deal in sight one has to wonder if Tavares really could end up playing on a new team as early as next season.

This is definitely one developing story you will want to keep your eyes on.
