Sweden gives up awful, heartbreaking goal against Latvia at IIHF World Championships

In case you missed it, Sweden narrowly avoided a historic loss at the IIHF World Championships earlier today, getting past Latvia by a score of 5-4. The Swedes ended up getting the game winner on an empty net goal, after a desperate Latvian team tried to earn a win in regulation.

The game featured several lead changes and provided some incredibly entertaining hockey. But perhaps the craziest goal though came on Latvia’s third period, game tying goal in which Swedish defenseman Mattias Ekholm fired the puck off of teammate Loui Eriksson’s shin pads and past a sprawling Henrik Lundqvist. In terms of the best own goals… this one is an absolute snipe.

Ouch… not sure who I feel worse for, Ekholm or Eriksson.

In any case, Sweden did manage to ultimately win the game and fans were treated to another great moment when young Swedish superstar Elias Pettersson sniped an absolute BEATUY before staring down the entire Latvian bench with his patented Death Stare.

Check it out:

An ice cold assassin.

Not to be outdone though, Latvian forward Roberts Bukarts answers back with his own Death Stare.

Again, just a wildly entertaining game.
