We keep thinking that the entire world was shocked when John Tavares decided to leave behind the New York Islanders to join and sign a lucrative contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 1st. While it was completely normal for Tavares' teammates in Brooklyn to have some angry feelings about the transaction, many will be surprised to find out that another of his former teammates, Ryan Strome, who was traded to the Edmonton Oilers during the summer of 2017, was also upset by the free agent signing elsewhere than with the Isles.

While Strome kept quite about his feelings during the signing of the deal with Toronto, he made sure that Tavares was aware of them at a surprising time. Strome, still a forward for the Oilers, was the emcee for Tavares' wedding to Aryne Fuller on August 4th, a little over a month after the Leafs winning the free-agent sweepstakes. Islanders team insider Arthur Staple of The Athletic revealed a great detail from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman's story as Strome fired a shot at his friend on his most important day as he held the microphone to entertain many guests.

"John Tavares and Aryne Fuller were married Aug. 4 in Niagara-on-the Lake, about 90 minutes southwest of Toronto. The emcee was Edmonton Oiler Ryan Strome, a former teammate. “So, Strome opens the night by saying, ‘I had this fantastic speech written, but I had to change it on July 1,’” one of the guests says, laughing at the memory. “People were dying.”

Tavares had to be aware, especially as he invited former teammates to his wedding, that his decision to sign long term with the Maple Leafs would come up.

However, it has since not preventing him from shining for Toronto - already. In their season opener on Wednesday night against the Montreal Canadiens in Toronto, Tavares scored his first goal of the season - and his first tally as a member of the Leafs - to get the crowd going and help his new team to clinch their first victory of the season with a 3-2 overtime win over the Habs. His teammates Auston Matthews scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime.

You can see Tavares' first official goal as a Leafs in the video above.

No everyone is a fan of Tavares, especially if they are fans of the Islanders, so Strome's joke and shot at his former teammate is a good way to help digest this major transaction in the star forward's career.
