This one was somewhat expected.

Team fires head coach after a disappointing season.

We had heard rumblings that ownership would be looking to push for this move, and given the back and forth through the media towards the end of the season, we expected it would be coming down.

The Ottawa Senators have announced the firing of head coach Dave Cameron and joining him on the chopping block will be assistant coaches Andre Tourigny and Rick Wamsley. Also terminated was assistant coach Jason Smith although Smith was offered another position within the Senators organization.

This was not a clear cut decision by any stretch, and as stated above the tensions between Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and Cameron may have played a role in his dismissal, something that given Melnyk's reputation for meddling with the team should come as little surprise.

Melnyk, who routinely refuses to spend to the cap to maximize the talent on his squad, was extremely critical of his team through the media at the end of the season, stating that no one in the organization was safe. While the wording of Cameron's response was not, his tone suggested he was dismissive of Melnyk's comments, and perhaps rightfully so, when he stated:

“That’s the owners’ prerogative. He pays the bills, he’s the man who is putting the money on the line and he has the right to make changes.

“That’s solely up to him. If he’s going to make changes, he’s going to make them.”

The changes have in fact been made, and Cameron and his coaching staff are now out, and it may have looked something like this.
