Team owner accuses NHL of having Penguins bias

Sour grapes? Or is there more to the accusation?

Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis is not one to hide his fandom. The Caps’ boss is the team’s biggest supporter and number one fan and isn’t shy about showing his allegiances. While his fandom usually manifests itself in the form of harmless gameday selfies and luxury box photo ops, he sometimes crosses the line and ventures into the absurd. Such is the case with today’s latest development.

In his latest article for Deadspin, Dave McKenna describes a 2010 meeting with the billionaire in which Leonsis revealed his belief in an NHL conspiracy theory that favours the Pittsburgh Penguins over his beloved Capitals. From McKenna’s article:

Ted then calls me over to sit by him at his desk and starts clicking his mouse to show me lots of game videos he’d stored on his computer that prove that the NHL wants the Pittsburgh Penguins to win and the Capitals to lose. I was too giddy at what was taking place to retain much of what I was shown, but remember clips of hits by Caps, including Alex Ovechkin, that garnered NHL suspensions, alongside clips of similar hits by Penguins players on Ovechkin and others that went unpunished by the league. I also recall leaving his office thinking: 1)Ted knows his hockey 2)he’s as nice and interesting as I’d figured, and 3)Holy mother of god he’s a big conspiracy guy!

That’s some juicy gossip! While the meeting isn’t likely to be verified, or even remembered, by Lenses, are there any Caps fans who doubt it? Leonsis may be a little off, but at least there’s no denying his love for his team!
