A teenager who is used to protecting the net for his teammates is now using his smarts to protect front-line hospital workers in Toronto.

13-year-old Warren Richmond-Kalaci, a goaltender whose season was put on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has made hundreds of face shields for the SickKids hospital through the use of a 3d printer.

“I feel like I’ve been handling (the pandemic) pretty well,” Richmond-Kalaci told CTV News Toronto. “I’ve been making myself pretty busy with this project and I think I’m making the best of it.”

“Honestly, it feels great. At points it’s been pretty hard, but after I dropped off the first batch of shields, it’s just all worth it when I saw the expressions on the nurses’ faces,” he said.

One of the teen’s coaches, Dave Kennedy of Armour Goaltending, teamed up with him to provide him with funding to create even more masks for nurses and doctors. The two created a Go-Fund Me account on called on their network of local Toronto goaltenders to help get the word out. They BLEW past their funding target of $1,500, raising a total of $6,500.

“$1,500 of that went to Warren for his product, and we wrote a cheque to SickKids for $5,000 dollars,” Kennedy explains. “We realize how powerful we are and what we can do with this. So it was really great.”

Incredible. Well done, Warren. You’re an absolute inspiration. Keep up the good work, buddy!
