Tempers flare at Don Cherry support rally in downtown Toronto

In case you missed it yesterday, a small crowd of Don Cherry supporters gathered outside of Rogers Sportsnet headquarters in downtown Toronto, Ontario to protest the firing of Cherry from the network’s Hockey Night in Canada program.

On Monday, Cherry was fired by Sportsnet for making divisive comments about immigrants and newcomers to Canada who do not wear a poppy to show support for Canadian veterans.  He said: “You people … you love our way of life, love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada.”

From the moment Cherry was fired by Sportsnet there has been an outpouring of support for the legendary broadcaster online and now in person. Unfortunately though, the unofficial Don Cherry support rally held in Toronto yesterday though was… well see for yourself:

That… that seems sparsely attended. I’m not sure two dozen people are going to force Rogers’ hand to do anything…

To make matters worse, the group protesting Cherry’s firing probably wasn’t the most representative of his true fans. I mean… just check out some of these protest signs:

Smash Communism? An Epstein sign? What do these have to do with Grapes? Seems a bit off topic…

To make matters worse, tempers flared during the event and police were forced to get involved.

Check it out:

I mean… just look at this crowd:

It’s probably fair to pass judgement on these people and say that they’re not true Grapes fans to begin with. I certainly don’t think that Grapes would be counting on anyone from this group to help him get back up on his feet again.
