It may have finally happened for the Capitals!

According to a report from Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman there has been a trade called placed for a deal between the Washington Capitals and the St. Louis Blues for defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk.

No word yet on what the Blues will be getting back in exchnage for Shattenkirk who will presumably be dealt as a rental.

Shattenkirk is a pending unrestricted free agent, and it’s long been assumed the Blues can’t afford to give Shattenkirk a raise over his $4.25-million cap hit. Shattenkirk is just 27 and one of the game’s premier puck-moving defensemen. He’s the type of commodity who doesn’t hit the open market often.

Needless to say the Capitals have already looked like a solid team this season and the addition of this kind of player would make them a massive threat in the post season, we will update you with official confirmation.

More to come.

Update: Jeremy Rutherford also now reporting the trade.

Update: Frank Severalli: Shattenkirk has been informed he is a Capital now and will be in the lineup for the team's next game.
