The Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenseman Mike Green.

The Edmonton Oilers have just pulled off a very significant trade.

According to a report from National Hockey League insider John Shannon, the Edmonton Oilers have acquired veteran defenseman Mike Green in exchange for something of a curious return at this time. All we know so far is that Kyle Brodziak, a player that has not played a single game this season and who's career appears to be over, is a part of the package. Obviously the inclusion of Brodziak was designed to get his salary cap hit off the books for the Oilers as well as allowing the Oilers to send back a contract the other way, however that is not much of a return if any for the Red Wings. 

Update: Alright now things are starting to become a little more clear, Shannon is now also reporting that going to the Red Wings will be a conditional draft pick at either the 2020 National Hockey League Entry Draft or at the 2021 National Hockey League Entry Draft. We thus far have not received any details regarding the nature of the draft pick, but no doubt this will be the actual return that the Detroit Red Wings were seeking in the trade of Mike Green. 

It is interesting to note that this trade was put together by Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland and Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman, two men who have a very long history with one another. No doubt both their relationship as well as Holland's ties to the Detroit Red Wings organization, and by extensions his ties to his former player in Mike Green, played a significant role in this deal getting done. 

Update: It appears as though the Edmonton Oilers may have actually been on Green's no trade list which makes this all the more interesting. According to TSN NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, Green waived his no movement clause in order to make this deal a reality, and you have to wonder again if his relationship with Holland may have played a significant role in this deal coming to fruition. No doubt Green was also excited to get off a Red Wings team that has done nothing but lose all season long, likely also a significant factor in his limited no trade clause being waived.
